Seeking New Debaters

On May 30th at 6PM in the Community Room at EHS we'll have an informational meeting for students interested in joining the team. Coming to the meeting does not obligate you to join the team. Current 8th through 11th graders are welcome to be on the team.

Consider our case for debate:

Our team is very successful. When you debate for Edina, you are debating for one of the better teams in America. Two years ago Edina finished the season as Minnesota state champions and qualified for Nationals four years in a row.  We schedule a difficult season and will compete against the best debaters locally and nationally – this year our varsity team members will be traveling to tournaments in North Carolina, Texas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Kansas and Kentucky.  Even as a new debater you will have a chance to debate against debaters from coast-to-coast as we attend a national-level tournaments at Apple Valley and Blake.

Colleges value students who are articulate and can organize their thoughts. More than 15% of West Point cadets were debaters. Of students in the Harvard class of 2012, more than 10% identified debate as their primary extracurricular activity in high school. The skills you learn as a debater make you an excellent communicator, synthesizer, and critical thinker.  This explains why the Wall Street Journal highlighted a consistent trend in selective college admissions relative to debate. State and national debate award winners have a 22% to 30% higher acceptance rate at top tier colleges and being captain of the debate team improved an applicant’s chances by more than 60% compared with the rest of the pool.  No other sport or activity had this kind of statistical impact. A former debater, who attended Harvard Law School, wrote me a note recently saying that, of all of her high school and undergraduate education, what prepared her most for law school was being on the high school debate team.

Debate is a place to call home.  Edina high school is a big place. Our debate team is a place to belong and establish an identity in the school. Everybody on the team is important to all of the coaches.

Meeting for Returning Debaters

On Monday, May 20th at 3:30 in room 310 at EHS we'll have a meeting of returning debaters.

The meeting should last about 1 hour and we'd like to get everybody who debated this year, both LD and policy to attend.  Building a strong team starts with hearing what you think about the state of the team and what you think we need to do to move forward together, so this is more of a working meeting and not just informational.
