Novice-JV State Results Recap

2013 Minnesota State Novice Lincoln-Douglas Runner-up, Annie Amen
We toughed out two days of freezing weather, a cold bus ride, and strong competition at the novice-junior varsity state tournament held at Eagan. Minnesota is one of the most competitive states for debate in the nation and the tournament was strong again this season.

Edina was awarded 3rd place in Team Sweepstakes, which we were not expecting because we had entires in only four of the six events.

Here is a recap:

JV Policy
Sukriti Rawal and Anand Mittal - quarterfinalists
Anne Lepow and Claire Carlson - 4-2 record

Novice Policy
Maggie Wells and Meredith Song - quarterfinalists
Megan Shannahan and Daphne Iskos - octofinalists
Maggie Wells - 4th speaker

Novice Public Forum
Aarathia Gaimella and Jenny Ma - octofinliasts
Khalid Ishani and David Ma - octofinalists

Novice Lincoln-Douglas
Annie Amen - 2nd place
Romi Lee - quarterfinalist
Gloria Mi - quarterfinalist
Mabel Thomas - octofinalist
Katie Bogart - double-octofinalist
Gloria Mi - 3rd speaker
Mabel Thomas - 5th speaker

One final note: Almost every member of the varsity team showed up to help their younger teammates by scouting opponents, doing prep-work, and being a supportive audience member.  Thanks to them for their efforts!

Each person on the team has been sent an evite with details for the party and we ask that your respond because that's the polite thing to do.

This weekend Edina debate was back on the road, competing at three different tournaments.

Edina SW - Novice Quarterfinalists @ Glenbrooks

University of Minnesota:
Novice debater Fernando Prestermon was 6th speaker and fellow novice Ella Romanelli was 9th.   It was very cold on Saturday morning and the Edina debaters braved a frozen campus to compete.

Annika Smith-Ortiz was both #1 seed and top speaker in JV, while novices Connie Chao (4-1), Annie Amen (3-2), and Katie Bogart (3-2) had winning records in the JV division.

The novice division was led Romi Lee who was also #1 seed and third speaker.  Murray Friedberg finished 4-1.

Debate Timers

Everybody needs to be able to keep time.  It's essential for debate.

Here are 3 timing solutions:

Android phones - have a built in timer that's pretty good already, but you can find one in the Google Play store named "Debate Timer" - it works well enough.

iOS devices - there are a couple for iOS that are OK.  I think a plain old count-down timer works well. The one I like is called "Countdown: The Big Timer & Clock" and works well.

Alternatives, you can buy a plain old kitchen timer found at Target.

NO Practice Thursday

We announced this several times on Monday, but just to make sure we've left no stone unturned...there is definitely no practice on Thursday due to the school holiday.

Practice Panorama

We had an all-team meeting tonight - to celebrate success and remind ourselves of the challenges we face.

Our message to the team tonight was this: “Life isn’t about what you can’t accomplish, it’s about what you’ve yet to achieve.” To that end, we watched an inspirational video about Richie Parker, a man born without arms, yet lives a life of both normalcy and excellence.

Judges Needed for Blaine

The good news is that we are taking 46 debaters out this weekend. We have a healthy, growing team with many motivated students who want to debate.  In order to make it possible for them to debate, we need judges for the tournament at Blaine on Saturday.  Every school has to provide judges in proportion to their entry -- if we can't find more judges, we have to reduce the number of kids who get to debate this weekend.  There isn't a third option.  Judging isn't hard -- although it might seem scary because of the unknow the first time -- and we do have some training materials to help you prepare so you know what to expect.  You'd only be judging novice debaters in the simplest debate format.  If you are willing to judge, please contact Pete at pgokey@gmail.com

Room Use
This note came from the tournament director and is important for both judges and debaters.
"Our building has been largely renovated since last year and there is an important note that I would like you to share with your teams and debaters: At Valley High School, we will be enforcing a rule that debaters may not enter their room until the judge is present. This is to address teacher concerns, particularly in science rooms. We will have adult volunteers walking the halls gently but firmly enforcing this rule, and if we find any students in a science room without a judge present, the consequence will be forfeiting the debate. "

This is an exciting time for Edina debate -- we have all of our experienced debaters returning from camp, plus we've had many inquiries from new debaters who wish to join the team.  The new season begins on Monday, August 19th at 6PM.

Report to the 300's hallway (math) of Edina High School and we'll give you more specific rooms once you arrive.

2013 Debate Mini-Camp

The 2013 Edina debate mini-camp will be on Saturday, August 24th.

The mini-camp is for returning, experienced team members.

We'll start at 10AM and finish at 3-4PM.

Since we'll already have been practicing for a couple days by the time we get to the 24th, our plan is to use the time for some individual and group discussions about goals for the upcoming seasons, plus organizing strategy and research assignments.  For sure we will do some mini-debates or drills as well.

This will be at the home of Coach Adriane (I will email you her address).  She will provide some light snacks, but everybody should bring $5 and we'll organize a team pizza order for lunch.

Seeking New Debaters

On May 30th at 6PM in the Community Room at EHS we'll have an informational meeting for students interested in joining the team. Coming to the meeting does not obligate you to join the team. Current 8th through 11th graders are welcome to be on the team.

Consider our case for debate:

Our team is very successful. When you debate for Edina, you are debating for one of the better teams in America. Two years ago Edina finished the season as Minnesota state champions and qualified for Nationals four years in a row.  We schedule a difficult season and will compete against the best debaters locally and nationally – this year our varsity team members will be traveling to tournaments in North Carolina, Texas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Kansas and Kentucky.  Even as a new debater you will have a chance to debate against debaters from coast-to-coast as we attend a national-level tournaments at Apple Valley and Blake.

Colleges value students who are articulate and can organize their thoughts. More than 15% of West Point cadets were debaters. Of students in the Harvard class of 2012, more than 10% identified debate as their primary extracurricular activity in high school. The skills you learn as a debater make you an excellent communicator, synthesizer, and critical thinker.  This explains why the Wall Street Journal highlighted a consistent trend in selective college admissions relative to debate. State and national debate award winners have a 22% to 30% higher acceptance rate at top tier colleges and being captain of the debate team improved an applicant’s chances by more than 60% compared with the rest of the pool.  No other sport or activity had this kind of statistical impact. A former debater, who attended Harvard Law School, wrote me a note recently saying that, of all of her high school and undergraduate education, what prepared her most for law school was being on the high school debate team.

Debate is a place to call home.  Edina high school is a big place. Our debate team is a place to belong and establish an identity in the school. Everybody on the team is important to all of the coaches.

Meeting for Returning Debaters

On Monday, May 20th at 3:30 in room 310 at EHS we'll have a meeting of returning debaters.

The meeting should last about 1 hour and we'd like to get everybody who debated this year, both LD and policy to attend.  Building a strong team starts with hearing what you think about the state of the team and what you think we need to do to move forward together, so this is more of a working meeting and not just informational.
