Judges Needed

We have a giant debate team, but to provide opportunities for everybody to debate, we also need judges to cover our entry.  Every judge we find means 2 or 4 more debaters can compete.

If you have any interest in judging, even if you've never judged, this would be a weekend where we need your help.  Or if you have any connections to former debaters.

Contact Joe Schmitt at jschmitt@nilanjohnson.com if you can help in any way.

MDTA Cup & All-State Awards Race

The Minnesota Debate Teacher's Association (MDTA) released their week 4 ranking for both teams and individuals.  There are still a couple months left in the season, so being ranked now is no guarantee of being ranked later, but for today we can celebrate where we are at as a team.  Here are the relevant snips from the MDTA results post:

"Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Edina (16 Points) continues to hold onto the top spot and starting to open up a slight lead on Apple Valley (14 Points) and Robbinsdale Cooper (12 Points).  The good news is there is a lot of season left for schools to get back into the race.

In the individual race, Edina’s Arvind Veluvali (7 Points) has pulled out to a one point lead over six others.  Here are the current top 8 + ties (All-State Award):
Arvind Veluvali (Edina), Sophie Krohn (Mahtomedi), Gloria Mi (Edina), Michael White (Robbinsdale_Cooper), Sophie Ober (Apple_Valley), Claire Hoffa (Apple_Valley), Calvin McMahon (Champlin_Park), Eric Dorland (Robbinsdale_Armstrong), Anand Mittal (Edina), Sara DeSobrino (Forest_Lake), Henry Dikeman (Apple_Valley)

Policy Debate
With another week in the books Eagan (12 Points) has jumped out to a huge lead over Rosemount and Edina (7 Points).  Eagan’s Wilary and Roberts (7 Points) have a three point lead over everyone.

Here are the current top 8 + ties (All-State Award):
Wilary (Eagan), Roberts (Eagan), Kirkley (Rosemount), Bhavsar (Blake), Phan (Jefferson), Stefanko (Rosemount), O’Neil (Blake), Chiev (Jefferson)

Public Forum Debate
St. Paul Academy (15 Points) has jumped up a spot and taken over first place from Eastview (14 Points) this week.  Edina (13 Points) moved up several spots to third place.

In the individual race we have a six-way tie for first place.  Here are the current top 8 + ties (All-State Award):
Colin Haave (Eastview), Kevin Bi (East Ridge), David Sebenaler (Chanhassen), Alex Baker (Eastview), Alicia Zhang (East Ridge), Colin Haave (Eastview), Marissa Williamson (Chanhassen), Julia Howes (Chanhassen)"

Where Tom Hanks and Coach K Intersect

This is a reminder to all of our debaters to keep working at debate every day.  Never put off work for tomorrow because those things never get done.  We've had success, we've had struggles, but in the midst of it all nothing matters more than consistent hard work.  The coaches are impressed: When we have work time at practice or discussions over arguments -- everybody is engaged and thoughtful.  Debate isn't always easy, which reminds us of this movie scene where Tom Hanks explains, "The hard is what makes it great."

Or, as Coach K, the coach of the Duke Basketball team reminds us - you have to win the day, every day.

Team list for Minneapple

We are taking about 20 people to compete in the national-level Minneapple tournament on November 6th and 7th.  These will be novice and varsity debaters in Public Forum + a handful of novice LD debaters as well.  You will compete against the very best in America, so it's a great opportunity to improve and test yourself.

Click here to see our preliminary entry.

Any questions, see Andy or Tim at practice.

Online Judge Signup + Training

Here is a link to the Edina judge list on signup genius:

Please indicate which tournaments you can judge for us, starting this weekend at the Maple Grove and St. Croix tournaments.  (Note:  we need 25 judges this weekend, which is what convinced me to move to signup genius.  This is a bit too much to manage ad hoc.)  If you have any questions, or if signup genius is not working for you, please contact Joe Schmitt at jschmitt@nilanjohnson.com

Also, Edina parents, and other new judges, we have organized a judge training session at Edina High School this Monday, October 19, at 6:00 PM in Room 317.  Edina debate alumnus Liz Scoggin, semifinalist at the Glenbrooks and at the NFL National Tournament, will be conducting the judge training.  Please feel free to stop by and participate in the training.
