Anoka High School
3939 Seventh Avenue North Anoka, MN 55303 [map, directions]
3 October 2015

** No Concessions.  You'll for sure want to bring your own food for breakfast and snacks. The Edina Friends of Forensics will be helping you by bringing in pizza.  Keep in mind this isn't an all-you-can-eat feasting. It's probably like 2 slices per person.  So if you need more than that for a long day, pack extra food.  And be sure to say THANK YOU to the EFOF parents who are making this possible for you.

Note from Tournament Director
Dear Coaches,
We are so excited to welcome you to Washington Technology this Saturday! We are expecting over 200 kids, which is a great start to the year. We are doing a few things to promote community building, so I hope you will help us encourage it among your students.

When you arrive - please send your students to the Great Hall (cafeteria). We will have bagels, juice and fruit and "Get to know you Bingo". We want to encourage students to introduce themselves to one another. You are of course welcome to join them after you have finalized your entries in tab.

We will also have name tags for coaches, judges and students. Please encourage your students to wear their name tags and introduce themselves before the start of the round. We will also ask judges to introduce themselves to the students. We would also really love it when folks are introducing themselves to include their pronouns (i.e. she/he/they).

For many of us, we stick with the activity because of the friendships we make. I am hoping that we can help that along a bit, by introducing one another. =)

Food
Pack enough food to be self-sufficient for the entire day.  If that means you bring a giant bag from Byerly's, do it.   Supposedly they will have something to eat for breakfast and lunch, but I wouldn't rely on it - seriously, bring a day's worth of food.  It's the only tournament in town and we're going to make the best of it.

Results from Lakeville South 2015

Two busloads of Edina debaters head to Lakeville South

A handful of comments from coach Andy Charrier:
  • We tried to photograph every winner as they left the stage but didn't capture them all. Here is a gallery of what we have.
  • Not sure if was nerves or concentration, but I've never ridden a more silent debate bus in the morning.
  • Thanks to coaches Pete Gokey, Clay Carlson, Tim Greenfield, Hayley Pierce-Ramsdell, and Raymond Zhang for getting the team off to a good start.
  • Debaters - our challenge is to improve every week.  "Debate like a champion, prepare as an underdog."

Bus Times
Depart 8AM from Door #7 of Edina High School
Return estimated 2-2:30PM *

* We will ask debaters to call home when they are on the road back from Eagan - should take us about 20 minutes to get back to Edina once underway.   Please have a ride ready so the coaches can go home and enjoy the rest of their Saturday too.

Attending
All novice and experienced debaters.  Novices will compete and experienced debaters will serve as judges/mentors for the practice rounds at the scrimmage.  List for roll call will be posted Tuesday night.

Philosophy of Scrimmage
Both Edina and Eagan use this day as an educational practice.  This isn't about winning or losing and we don't even want judges to do any disclosing of "wins" at all.  The focus is on improvement. If you are an experienced debater, you will remember that those first rounds we so rough.  Remember that feeling when you are helping novices!

Experienced debaters should watch the demo debate and disperse themselves around the room to sit with novices and help them flow.

What to Bring
* Cases and evidence
* Timer
* Paper/legal pads for flowing + pens
* Water bottle
* Wear casual school-appropriate clothing as this is a practice event
* Lunch provided (compliments of the Edina Friends of Forensics)

Sept 9th Parent Meeting

 The annual all-team all-parent meeting:

Wednesday, September 9th 6:30 PM at EHS Fick Auditorium.

Coffee and cookies served at 6PM courtesy of the Edina Friends of Forensics.

It's important to have a parent and debater attend so that we can start the season on common understanding of expectations and the nuts-and-bolts of how you can help your debater.
