2016 Summer Camps

There are many summer camp options for debate.  We put together a a handout of camps that we've had first-hand experience with and endorse as being decent camps that in Minneapolis or the Midwest:

2016 Debate Summer Debate Camp Guide

And then we are having our own early-summer camp for LD and PF debaters:

Hornet Camp 2016 – Edina, MN
June 20-30 day camp 9AM-5PM  $500 (dates, times, and expense all estimates)

We are hosting our own workshop to kick off the summer.   A minimum of 12 PF and 12 LD students are needed to make this camp happen.  Instructors will be successful nationally competitive coaches who will work with local assistants.

More info and registration paperwork  will posted on edinadebate.com by the end of December.

Dec 7 - Season Wrap-up + Summer Camp Information

The last practice for most for most of our novice and 2nd year debaters will be Monday, December 7th at 6PM -- 6PM regardless of your usual practice time.   For now we're planning on holding this in room 324.

Our plan is to talk through a number of end-of-season wrap up items.

The big agenda item is to talk about summer camps for debate (and speech).   We have a lot of exciting news and planning information for you.

This should last about an hour and conclude about 7PM.

Thank You 2015

As we reach the end of #nosleepnovember, the short pause in the season gives me the opportunity to express a strong and sincere thank you to the many people that have made our season a success so far:
  • Thanks to the parents and student volunteers who collectively made our tournament a success.  Our tournament ran well, gathered compliments, and set a high standard for future Edina tournaments.
  • Thanks also to parents for the many early morning drop-offs, and in some cases early morning pick-ups.  Seeing you pick your kids up always reminds me of my parents driving to collect me after tournaments.
  • Thanks to our coaches for their dedication, positivity, and loyalty to our speech and debate teams.  You are the best, I find your work to be inspiring.
  • Thanks to the Edina Speech team.  Together, we are going to the top.
  • Thanks the staff and administration who do the unseen work that makes our season even possible.  These are the people for whom the answer is always, "Yes, what's the question?"
  • Thanks to the Edina Friends of Forensics, Edina Community Education, and the Edina Education Fund for their help.
  • Thanks to our friends at the Galleria for the opportunities to showcase our team.
  • Finally, thanks to our team members.  Your energy and commitment is contagious, making coaching a pleasure.  Keep it up!
Happy Thanksgiving,
Andy Charrier

Highland Park Recap

Highland Park Champions
While LD, PF, and Congress debaters we busy at Edina, our Policy debaters were competing at Highland Park.  Anne and Sukriti took down the varsity championship.  Anne also earned 5th place speaker honors while Sukriti was 2nd speaker.

The novice debaters were also champions.  Lily and Elsa were undefeated and Lily was 2nd speaker.

Dani and Maggie

And a shout out to Maggie for taking Dani, a novice, into varsity as her partner for the weekend.  Maggie spent the weekend teaching and coaching her partner, making her more prepared for hard debates to come yet this season.  It's an example of the many instances of selfless leadership that are becoming the norm on our team.

Nov 14 @ The Edina Classic

The Edina Classic
Edina High School
14 November 2015

You are making history:  This is our first tournament in 30+ years, and the first time there has been a combined Speech and Debate tournament in Minnesota since the 1990s.

Coach-in-Charge *
Hayley Pierce-Ramsdell
Tim Greenfield
* If you are an Edina competitor, you should go to these two people for any questions during the day.  Elizabeth and Andy will be busy running the tournament.

Check-in on tournament day
Everybody who is competing -- both speech and debate -- needs to check in with Hayley (and only Hayley) in room 324 by 7:30AM. She will have a clipboard and a copy of our roster.  If you are not checked in by 7:30 we are dropping you from the tournament. Once you've checked in, you need to take your materials to the common space and prep like we do at any other tournament.

Notes
  1. Nobody leaves until the building is cleaned.  As soon as you are done debating/speaking, you need to report to room 324 to be assigned clean-up jobs.  With a team our size, we should be able to having building more or less done by the time awards begin.
  2. We expect you to attend awards.
  3. Do we want to win things? Absolutely!  But we also take the extra steps expected of hosts. For example, if you see people looking for rooms, you need to take time to graciously help our guests.  ("Never trashy, always classy.") We also need you to look out for well-being of our classrooms.
  4. We will post the full roster soon, but you should expect to be debating or speaking.
  5. I need 6-8 volunteers to help with setup on Friday night.  We'll start at 4 and finish when we have the building ready for competition.  We'll provide dinner when we're done.  BUT...I only want helpers who ask, "What can I do next?"
  6. Student volunteers sign up here.
  7. Then I need Adi, Arvind, Connie, Leah, and Samantha to be my extra-help helpers on Saturday, making one final sweep of building to make sure everything is clean.
