David Bloom Scholarship - Seniors Take Note

David Bloom was a leading speech and debate competitor at Edina West who died while covering the Iraq war for NBC in 2003.  His family has created the David Bloom Scholarship through the Local Scholarship Program.  This particular scholarship is for senior students who are passionate about and active in either speech or debate during their time at Edina High School.

(I competed against David when I was in high school and he was everything a coach would want - smart, relentlessly hard working, fluent, persuasive, and concise; David worked with me as a student at debate camp and I learned a lot from my practice sessions with him.)

NFLs @ Chanhassen

Southern MN NFL Qualifiers
Chanhassen High School [map]
24-25 January 2014

Notes about NFLs -

  1. NFLs is double-elimination tournament.
  2. There is no power-matching in the traditional sense.  Rounds are paired based only on like-records.
  3. The fields will be small in both LD and Policy, so be 100% mentally ready to have your hardest, most important debate of the tournament right away in round 1 -- things like that happen in this format.
  4. Resiliency matters. You might get a disappointing loss, then have to turn right around and win.  You might also think you are eliminated but get the chance to make nationals via a debate-back. Nationals is all about being mentally tough, and districts already brings out that challenge.
